Abstract:

This brief from the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness looks at suspension rates among middle schoolers in New York City during the 2015-2016 school year. The researchers found that 12% of the 37,500 suspensions given were to homeless students who represent only 9% of the total population. The brief discusses how suspensions exacerbate problems for homeless students who already miss about 20 school days per year. Data from over six years indicate that 4 in 10 homeless students who experience suspension will ultimately drop out of high school compared with fewer than 1 in 10 of students who are not suspended.
